Prompt Engineering in GPT-4, It's harder than it looks..

If I can do it, YOU can do it!

Welcome back y’all! I tried my hand at Prompt Engineering in Chat GPT-4

If you are anything like me, you may have thought any prompt in GPT is “prompt engineering”….. I was wrong.

After a week of working on my prompt engineering, I can say it’s significantly more challenging than it looks.

I started to get the hang of building some basic templates that are super useful in my role.

After researching various sources, I have compiled a list of strategies to help you improve your customer conversations.

Prompt Engineering is all about figuring out how to give very specific instructions to get your desired output. The better your intructions, the better the AI performs.

4 foundations of Basic Prompting

  1. Be specific

  2. Use placeholders <like_this_here> to build interchangeable templates

  3. Use two hashtags like this ## to separate parts of the prompt with instructions, desired format, or examples.

  4. Be specific about the format you wish to see.

Let’s build a template to examine a Form 10-K.

I will give you a report titled <title_of_the_report> as input. Please access the report through the following link <URL_of_the_report> using the online browsing feature. Summarize the report in less than <summary_wordcount> and add <number_of_quotes> that reference supply chain and logistics.

Make sure to pick precise quotes and list them as bullet points.

<title_of_the_report> = Costco Form 10-K

<URL_of_the_report> = https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/909832/000090983222000021/cost-20220828.htm

 <summary_wordcount> = 250

<number_of_quotes> = 3

##

Desired format: Title: <title_of_the_report>

Link: <URL_of_the_report>

Summary of the report based on the previous instructions.

Quote #1 -
Quote #2 -
Quote #3 -

<Results>

Let's keep the prompt the same and attach the most recent earnings call transcript as a PDF.

GPT has two sources.

We will then ask GPT to generate an introductory email based on two summaries and quotes.

This can all be done with one command with the PDF upload.

We also introduced Mathew McConnaughy to provide voice and tone context.

I will give you a report titled <title_of_the_report> as input. Please access the report through the following link <URL_of_the_report> using the online browsing feature. Summarize the report in less than <summary_wordcount> and add <number_of_quotes> that reference supply chain and, or logistics. Make sure to pick precise quotes and list them as bullet points.

<title_of_the_report> = Costco 10-K
<URL_of_the_report> = https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/909832/000090983222000021/cost-20220828.htm
<summary_wordcount> = 150
<number_of_quotes> = 3

Desired format:

Title: <title_of_the_report>
Link: <URL_of_the_report>

Summary of the report based on the previous instructions.

Now you will ask me to upload a PDF titled <title_of_the_report> as input. Once I’ve uploaded, Please access the report. Summarize the report in less than <summary_wordcount> and add <number_of_quotes> that reference supply chain or logistics. Make sure to pick precise quotes and list them as bullet points.

<title_of_the_report> = Costco Q3 earnings call transcript
<summary_wordcount> = 150
<number_of_quotes> = 3

Desired format:

Title: <title_of_the_report>
Link: <URL_of_the_report>

Summary of the report based on the previous instructions.

Use the quotes and summary to craft a relevant <summary_of_word_count> Introductory email to the <title_contact> of <company_name> to schedule to a meeting to discuss services my <my_company_name> can provide using relevant information from <my_company_url> to provide a reason for a meeting. Use the voice and tone of Mathew McConaughey.

<title_contact> = Vice president of supply chain
<company_name> = Costco
<my_company_name> = Demo Company
<my_company_url> = Website URL of demo company
<summary_of_word_count> =150

<Results>

Now, these are just examples; this is not an email I would hit send on, but you can start to see how prompt engineering can help you work more efficiently.

Regardless of your role, you can set up templates for anything you can imagine when you understand how to use prompt engineering.

This is just the tip of the iceberg…We are just getting warmed up!

Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better

Next Sunday, I plan to build on this and learn new functional templates to share.

Cheers,

Will
